Put Down Your Shovel: Your Guide to Caravan Toilets

Answering the call of nature is one of life's unavoidable responsibilities, and when you're out on the road, it can be a little tricky. Luckily, the popularity and affordability of caravan toilets mean the days of stumbling out into the night searching for a tree with a trowel in your hand are long gone. In this Buyers Guide, we'll explore the three main types of caravan toilets currently on the market, and show you some of our favourites that we stock here at Shop RV Parts.

Gravity Flush Toilets

The Dometic 511 Traveller gravity-flush toilet requires no electricity and uses only 0.5L of water with each flush.

Highly water efficient and requiring no electricity, gravity drop toilets are hugely popular in marine applications, but can be installed just as easily in a caravan. Designed to be installed directly above a holding tank and featuring an air-tight seal, gravity-flush toilets only use half a litre of water per flush, making them ideal for off-road adventures where it is essential to conserve your water supply.

The Dometic 511 Traveller shown above is a robust and elegant gravity-flush toilet with a high-gloss china finish, easy to operate foot pedal, and an integrated vacuum breaker to protect your water supply.

Cassette Toilets

The Dometic CTS 4110 is a lightweight and versatile cassette toilet with an integrated waste-storage tank.

Cassette toilets are one of the most popular options on the market and can be found in caravans of all sizes and budgets. A self-contained design that requires no additional tanks or plumbing, cassette toilets feature a removable tank that stores your waste until it is ready to be disposed of in the appropriate facilities.

Lightweight and versatile, cassette toilets are typically 30% lighter than traditional ceramic toilets, and many feature a rotating seat that makes them perfectly suited to small bathrooms and other tight spaces. The Dometic CTS 4110 shown above is a quality cassette toilet with an ergonomic design, scratch-resistant ceramic bowl and a hygienic and capacious 19L tank.

Portable Toilets

The Dometic 18.9L Sanipottie 976 portable toilet is perfect for smaller vehicles and tents.

Compact and lightweight, portable toilets are the most affordable of the three styles and also the best-suited to small spaces such as cars, vans and camper trailers. Similarly to cassette toilets, portable toilets feature a detachable storage tank that holds your waste until it is ready to be disposed and typically have a capacity of between 10L and 20L.

The main difference between portable toilets and other toilets is their size. Because portable toilets are designed for small spaces, they are usually no more than 30-40cm high, allowing them to be stored in a cupboard when not in use. Their simple design also features a push-button flush, tank level indicator and a locking lid to prevent any unpleasant spills during transit.

At Shop RV Parts, we stock a number of portable toilets, including the Thetford Porta Potti 365, a large model with an integrated emptying spout that makes disposing of your waste easy and straightforward.
